Name : Amitabh Bachahan
Date of Birth : 11 Oct 1942
Father : Harivansh Rai Bachchan
Birth Place : Allahabad

Son of the great poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, this six feet tall man from Allahabad started the trend of the angry young man in the film industry. Director K. A. Abbas launched him in the film Saat Hindustani which went unnoticed. But luckily for him Prakash Mehra signed him for Zanjeer which worked out extraordinarily well, for the young star and he never looked back. This versatile actor even did the playback in most of his films. Amitabh met with a serious accident on the sets of Coolie, the entire nation united in prayers for his speedy recovery. The prayers turned into a blessing for the superhero, as he returned to the scene with double the impact
Bachchan made his film debut in 1969 as one of the seven protagonists in Saat Hindustani, a film directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. Starring opposite actors such as Utpal Dutt, Madhu and Jalal Agha the film was not a financial success but Bachchan won his first National Film Award for Best Newcomer. The critically acclaimed and commercially successful Anand (1970) followed, where he starred alongside Rajesh Khannawho was the leading popular actor at the time. Bachchan playing the role of Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee treating a cancer patient. He got his first Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance. In 1972 he made an appearance in the road action comedy Bombay to Goa directed by S. Ramanathan
While filming Coolie in 1982, Bachchan nearly fatally injured his intestines during the filming of a fight scene with co-actor Puneet Issar. The accident received wider world coverage and hit the headlines in the UK something unheard of at the time. Many Indians prayed in temples or offered to sacrifice their own limbs to save him and later there were mile-long queues of well-wishing fans outside the hospital where he was recuperating.
Some facts about Amitabh Bachchan:

1. During his school days, Amitabh dreamt of becoming an engineer. At one point, he even contemplated joining the Indian Air Force.
2. Amitabh Bachchan once spent a few nights on a bench at Marine Drive, Mumbai, when he was a struggler trying to make it big in films. When Amitabh was in a critical condition after the near fatal accident on the sets of Coolie, wife Jaya would walk barefoot daily from the Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai to the famed Siddhi Vinayak Temple, six kilometres away, praying for his quick recovery
3. It was during the making of Sholay that Amitabh discovered he was going to be a father of his firstborn, Shwetambiri. Amitabh's role of the strong, silent Jai was first offered to Shatrughan Sinha who refused to play second fiddle to Dharmendra
4. While shooting for Mukul Anand's Khuda Gawah, Najibullah, then the president of Afghanistan, provided Amitabh with half the country's air force for his protection. Khuda Gawah became one of the most watched Indian films in Afghanistan.
5. His father Harivansh Rai Bachchan was considering naming him 'Inquilab' (which means 'revolution') before settling down for Amitabh which means 'brilliance unlimited'.
6. In a 'People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA) poll Amitabh Bachchan won the title of Hottest Vegetarian Alive.
7. Following a near fatal accident while shooting Coolie (1983/I), during which he suffered internal bleeding and required 17 bottles of blood, he became a champion for the cause of encouraging more people to donate blood.
